Description: Armstrong Atlantic State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics. The appointment will begin in August 2010 pending budgetary approval.

In addition to providing quality instruction to students, the successful candidate will be expected to carry a service load within the department and the university as well as be engaged in scholarly activities involving undergraduate students.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry or closely related field is required as well as a strong commitment to quality teaching and scholarly activities involving undergraduates. Candidates should have completed the Ph.D. at time of application or expect to complete the Ph.D. by August 10, 2010. Post-doctoral research experience is preferred. Applicants should possess a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and will be expected to develop an active undergraduate research program and pursue external funding.

The field of specialization is open however special consideration will be given to candidates with expertise in the areas of biochemistry or bio-organic chemistry. The position requires a strong commitment to quality undergraduate education and research activities involving undergraduates. The minimum qualifications for candidates also include effective communication as demonstrated by a seminar during the on-campus interview.

The Department: The Department consists of 12 full time chemistry faculty, 4 full time physics faculty, 9 part-time faculty and 3 staff. Full time faculty have responsibilities in the areas of scholarship, advisement and service, as well as teaching.

The faculty is active in projects involving basic laboratory research; areas include environmental chemistry, natural products chemistry, organic chemistry, nanotechnology, biochemistry, biotechnology, inorganic synthesis, catalysis and photochemistry. In addition to these basic research areas, the faculty is also involved in a variety of other scholarly activities including the development of curriculum materials, the creation and assessment of technology teaching tools, the incorporation of new teaching methods and approaches into existing courses, the design of new courses, as well as projects that address community and pre-college outreach and education. Faculty regularly disseminate their scholarly results at professional meetings and in peer-reviewed publications.

The Department provides opportunities for undergraduate research in chemistry. Many students report their results via professional meetings, publication and the preparation of written reports as required for the experience.

Faculty members advise chemistry and physics majors as well as a wide variety of pre-professional and undecided majors. Students interact with faculty in several discipline-related organizations.

The Department is housed in a 129,000 ft2 state of the art science center, opened in June 2002. A large collection of modern equipment is housed in the Science Center, including a new state of the art TOF LC-MS, microwave system, FTIR (3), Raman, GC, HPLC, GC-MS (2), CE, UV-Vis (3), TGA, DSC, XRF, a scanning tunneling microscope, and a 300 MHz NMR. The University: Armstrong Atlantic State University is a four-year coeducational senior unit in the University System of Georgia and has an enrollment of 7,500 students. It is located approximately twelve miles south of the historic district of the city of Savannah on a modern 250 acre campus.
